Saving Snow Film Premiere

Citizens Climate Lobby and Squaw Valley Institute present Saving Snow in partnership with Elders Climate Action Campaign (ECAC), Protect Our Winters (POW), and Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows. This powerful documentary focuses on the impacts of disappearing snow seasons in mountain communities that depend on winter tourism and recreation. The film highlights individuals and organizations that are working to reduce their communities’ impacts on the environment and raise awareness of the need for action.

With this being a Winter Olympic year, athletes are also speaking up about what they see happening to their sport. Jessie Diggins, USA Olympic Gold medalist says in an interview with the New York Times, “You can look at different solutions for the economy, but you only get one earth to live on, and you have to breathe the air that is on this earth. We have to do it in a way that doesn’t hurt families economically, which is why I’m supporting the carbon fee and dividend solution, because it puts a fee on carbon and returns the revenue to households.”

“With all of my films, the goal is to make climate change concrete,” says Saving Snow filmmaker Diogo Freire, “I try to find specific examples of communities that are being affected—and also show how they’re responding.”

Following the film will be a unique panel discussion with public Q&A and action steps that people can take to express their commitment to making a difference with climate solutions.

The panel of local experts will include:

Doug Stoup: The world’s leading polar explorer and guide, conservationist and Global Green award winner, as well as a Protect Our Winters (POW) athlete.
Alicia Barr: Truckee businesswoman, co-founder and president of FiftyFifty Brewing Co. and Drunken Monkey; former member of Truckee’s Town Council for four years, as well as serving as Truckee’s mayor in 2015.
Morgan Goodwin: Mayor of Truckee during the passage of the 100% renewable energy resolution; advocate for a more bike-able/walk-able Truckee and Truckee Town Council member.
John Sorensen: co-leader of the Northern California Elders Climate Action campaign; elder strategist for social and environmental justice; former aerospace engineer and entrepreneur.
Rebecca Anderson: Director of Education, Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), holds a B.A. in Geosciences, and an M.S. in Geological Sciences. She worked with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Ice Core Drilling Project analyzing ice core in Antarctica.

The event will be held at the Base Camp in the Village at Squaw Valley. Admission is FREE for all SVI Members! General admission is $15 per adult, $5 per child/student. Doors open at 5:00 pm, opening presentation starts at 5:30 pm, film screening begins at 6:00 pm followed by public Q&A with the expert panel. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) is a non-profit, non-partisan grassroots advocacy organization focused on national solutions to address climate change, particularly putting a price on carbon through a carbon fee and dividend policy. To generate the political will necessary for passage of a national price on carbon, CCL trains and supports volunteers in over 400 chapters to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community.
