At 60-80 000 years, Indigenous Australian culture is the oldest continuing culture in the world. Having no written language, important stories, beliefs and practical knowledge were passed on through artwork, a practice which continues today. In many cases the paintings contain secret and sacred information, requiring artists to have the correct permission or inheritance to paint them. Contemporary Indigenous Australian art, with its distinctive dot style, is approximately 50 years old. It maintains these important traditions but uses modern materials such as acrylic paint. In this class with local artist Carole Sesko we will produce paintings inspired by this dot technique. This is an excellent class for learning to paint loose and for breaking out of stylistic constraints.
